Cuomo Signs Legislation Prohibiting “Palcohol”

Powdered alcohol abuse – or Palcohol, due to the fact the Arizona-based Lipsmark cell phone calls it – won’t be allowable in New York after Gov. Andrew Cuomo endorsed an ivoice excluding it Friday.

The freeze dried alcohol is sold in small bags and is intended to be mixed with water to create drinks.

While more than 20 states have banned powdered alcohol, Palcohol believes any prohibition on the substance limits consumers’ freedom of choice.

“This unsafe product is a public health disaster waiting to happen”, Cuomo said.

Supporters of the ban say Palcohol, which is sold in bags, is easier to hide and carry around than the liquid beverage.

The now-banned Palcohol comes in vodka, rum, Cosmopolitan and Powderita flavors but the product’s website indicates they’re seeking alcohol distributors outside of the no-fun United States. “Kids can stash Palcohol in their pocket when they leave the house for a party and their parents would never know the difference”.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, this year introduced legislation to ban powdered alcohol nationwide.

Schumer said powdered alcohol could become the “Kool-Aid for underage binge drinking”.
