Customer shoots suspect during restaurant robbery

The customer in Charleston was armed, however, and intervened, which helped protect the other Waffle House customers and employees.

The Charleston Post and Dispatch said that a customer opened fire on Davis.

The Waffle House crew was busily going about its typical early-morning ritual – smothering and scrambling breakfast, clanking through the dirty dishes – when a robber jolted them out of their routine. The suspect, who police have also not named, was rushed to the hospital where he dies from his wounds.

Angela Johnson told multiple media outlets that shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday the armed suspect tried to rob the Waffle House. The Coroner’s Office later identified the suspect as 19-year-old Joshua Jermaine Davis. Johnson said the customer interrupted the robbery attempt, wounding the suspect. “No one was hurt, which is the best part”, says a Waffle House division manager.

“Ongoing efforts by the Coroner’s Office and North Charleston Police Department to identify the suspect have been unsuccessful”, Johnson said. “He saved us, that’s what he did”, said one employee.

The restaurant manager said Davis, who has a son, did not steal anything, and the restaurant saw only minor damage from broken glass.
