CWG 2018: What’s haunting the Indian Contingent in Gold Coast?

Of course, our Sportswoman of the Year, Eileen Cikamatana broke her Commonwealth and Oceania Championships record at the Mini Pacific Games in Vanuatu last year with a lift of 105kg in the snatch and 143kg in the clean and jerk categories for a total lift of 248kg. With the start of the opening ceremony at Gold Coast, Australia will officially become the fifth nation to host the mega sporting event between the Commonwealth nations.

The Games will have its fair share of global stars in the likes of Jamaican sprinter Yohann Blake, world champion hurdler Sally Pearson, British diver Tom Daley and India’s very own Mary Kom and South Africa’s Caster Semenya among others.

Games chairman Peter Beattie said the Olympics should take note of the Commonwealth’s move to gender equality for medal events, which he described as a first for a major Games.

Other notable Canadians slated to compete are swimmers Kylie Masse and Taylor Ruck, pole vaulters Shawn Barber and Alysha Newman, racewalker Evan Dunfee and rugby sevens stars Ghislaine Landry and Nathan Hirayama, among many others.

However, this event is not entirely about big names winning medals.

When is the opening ceremony? Chef de Mission duties have been entrusted to Paul Sultana who is assisted by the Director of Sport Ivan Balzan together with four Directors from the Executive Board of the Maltese Olympic Committee who will be assisting athletes throughout the Games.

India has sent a 219-member athletes’ contingent to Gold Coast for participation in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

– With the first of three consecutive Olympic Games on the continent now complete, SportAccord returns to Asia in April, bringing the usual raft of representatives from global federations and leading host cities with it to the Thai capital of Bangkok.

Para-athletes competing at the Games also had to go through a qualification process.

Also of note is the reintroduction of basketball to the programme. At what time games will play?

The opening ceremony will be held on Wednesday, April 4, at 7 p.m. (4 a.m. Cayman time).
