“Cyber Monday has pushed online spending to a new high, and is on track to hit a record $3 billion in sales, in line with our forecast”, Adobe Digital Index Principal Analyst Tamara Gaffney said in a statement.
Cyber Monday was the largest online sales day in USA history, according to several firms tracking sales. “The ease of online shopping through mobile devices now lets millions of people research what they want as well as make timely purchases any day of the weekend – a win-win for both retailers and shoppers”.
ShopperTrak is still projecting an increase of 2.4 percent in sales at brick-and-mortar stores for the full holiday season.
Among the biggest retailer headlines yesterday was that Target’s website crashed due to high demand.
Smartphones were the preferred method of online purchases on Cyber Monday, according to IBM, driving 15% of Internet sales, up about 70% from past year. It wasn’t a blowout – 103 million online to 102 million in stores – but it’s still noteworthy.
While IBM’s report does not give a total dollar amount for Monday’s online sales, it does say the company saw a 17.8 percent increase from 2014.
The media measurement and analytics company reported that $3.12bn was spent on the day, marking a 21 per cent increase in total spending compared to last year’s $2.59bn.
He said: “Retailers still have more opportunities to reach customers in the run up to Christmas, with Manic Monday on December 7 representing the time when consumers look to order gifts to ensure they receive them before Christmas, before the traditional Boxing Day sales begin”. Now, even with broadband access, Cyber Monday continues to be a day when retailers pull out big promotions. “The Thanksgiving opening has extended the traditional Black Friday shopping surge to last the entire weekend…as shoppers were coming out to our malls in droves between Thursday and Sunday”.

Of the mobile sales, $575 million were made with Apple devices, and $219 million were made with Android devices.
