D’backs agree to two-year deal with Tyler Clippard

Clippard, who turns 31 on Sunday, will earn $12.25 million, including a $4 million signing bonus, according to reports, with the Diamondbacks.

A source described the Diamondbacks as “hopeful” they could get a deal done with Clippard, saying the sides were discussing both one-year and multi-year contract scenarios. The relief pitcher probably remained on the market a bit longer than most expected considering his track record, especially in light of the fact that he didn’t come attached to draft pick compensation.

After seven seasons with the Washington Nationals, Clippard began 2015 with Oakland, appearing in 36 games and striking out 38 batters in 38.1 innings with a 1.190 WHIP.

Although notching 17 of his 19 saves as a member of the Athletics, the veteran reliever did make eight postseason appearances for the Mets after being acquired on July 27. Clippard signed a one-year deal worth $8.3 million ahead of last season, so he could be due for a similar salary this season.

Despite his poor finish with the Mets, Clippard still boasts very solid career numbers. It’s no surprise that in that season, Clippard’s ERA was a measly 2.18, which indicates that Clippard should focus on inducing more ground balls in 2016, especially if his strikeout rate continues to decline. He has tossed at least 70 innings since 2010 and has never been on the disabled list.
