Padsalgikar is the first Maharashtrian to take over as the Mumbai police chief after nearly a decade.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Saturday named senior IPS officer Dattatray Padsalgikar as Mumbai’s new Commissioner of Police.

Mid-day reported that the Padsalgikar was offered the job in September past year after Rakesh Maria was transferred following Sheena Bora murder case, but he rejected the offer as he was keen on continuing with his IB posting.

Earlier, speaking at his ceremonial farewell hosted by his fellow officers, Javed asked all the deputy commissioners and above rank officers to make it a priority to look into the wellbeing of the force. “I would like to give a suggestion to the officers to do so”, he said.

State home department officials, however, also made another crucial announcement of downgrading the post of Mumbai police commissioner to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADG). Javed was the DG (Homeguards) before taking up the post.

He is soon likely to take charge of his new responsibility as the Indian envoy in Saudi Arabia.
