Daisy Ridley Spills on ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Title

The shoot is over and editing has commenced for Rian Johnson’s much-anticipated Star Wars: Episode VIII, but that doesn’t mean that fans should expect to learn the official title of the movie just yet, according to star Daisy Ridley. Surely some hint as to what’s happening in the Star Wars universe would be in the next movie’s title, but Daisy Ridley hinted that we wouldn’t know what’s going to be under the massive, yellow Star Wars crawl for quite some time.

“I heard a title, and I’m not sure if it’s going to be that”.

“Historically, this makes sense”, said ComicBook.com’s Star Wars expert Lucas Siegel, “as The Force Awakens wasn’t revealed as the title of Episode VII until the first week of November 2014, about 13 months before its release. It’s going to be a while before it’s released I imagine”.

Fans expecting to hear the official moniker of the next Star Wars film would no doubt be crestfallen to learn they had a long time to wait, yet it is unclear what exact timeframe Ridley is referring to. Imagine having The Woman Who Plays Rey in Star Wars as your close friend and getting zero info about anything. Pablo Hidalgo, a Creative Exec at Lucasfilm, revealed the film’s original title was “Shadow of the Empire”. But it ended up becoming The Force Awakens, likely to avoid any confusion regarding the title’s similarity to the book Shadows of the Empire, which is now no longer canon.

It may be true as well that Episode VIII doesn’t even have a final title yet. Shortly thereafter we got the first teaser trailer on Black Friday and Star Wars fans lost their mind.

Directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: Episode VIII will arrive in theaters on December 15, 2017.

With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on the horizon, a good time to announce the title and reveal a teaser would be when the spin-off hits theaters.
