Dak Prescott: ‘I’m the smartest QB’ in 2016 draft class

Prescott would be the first rookie quarterback to start a Cowboys’ season opener since Quincy Carter in 2001.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered a broken bone in his back on the third play of Thursday night’s preseason game but coach Jason Garrett said the injury would not cost the veteran the 2016 season.

“We’re confident that he’s going to be coming back and playing football for us this year”, coach Jason Garrett said but provided no timetable on Romo’s return.

The pain dissipated and Romo tried to lobby to go back in the game.

So what now? Romo, who missed 12 games last season as the Cowboys fell from 12-4 to 4-12, will be out for at least six games, but maybe 10. While he is out, rookie quarterback Dak Prescott will take over as the starter. “All the work he’s done and put into this point to see him go down is pretty bad”. He has completed 39-of-50 for 454 yards (9.1 yards per attempt) and five touchdowns, good for a passer rating of 137.8. At the quarterback position, the next man is Dak Prescott.

Romo was injured on Dallas’ third offensive play on Thursday night.

Garrett does acknowledge that today and for the near future Romo will be wearing a brace to support the L1 compression fracture in his back.

Through three preseason games, Griffin has displayed that he can run the offense efficiently, and he has taken some hits and has been able get back up. In 2014 Romo missed one game after suffering two transverse process fractures after getting kneed in the back against the Washington Redskins. “I think everybody is wanting to get their hands around what exactly we’re dealing with. That’s not the nature of the NFL”, Garrett said. “And I’m going to be focused”.

Romo missed 12 games in 2015 to collarbone and shoulder problems. “I thought he did a particularly good job in this game against Seattle because he certainly didn’t anticipate going in on the fourth play of the game”. However, throughout training camp and in the preseason, Claiborne has gotten his hands on more balls and wants to take the next step in what has been a disappointing career to date. He’s had an impressive preseason, totaling seven touchdowns with zero interceptions.
