Prime Minister Narendra Modi today highlighted the contribution of Africa in shaping the identity of Indian diaspora, saying Africa is the land that contributed to India being known worldwide. The Prime Minister is also expected to visit Pietermaritzburg and Durban. After South Africa, he will go to Tanzania and Kenya.
Talking on India-Mozambique ties, Modi said, “Our shared struggles and suffering under colonial oppression brought our two countries together”.
During his visit here, Modi will also visit the Old Fort Prison complex at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. “And what Mozambique requires is available in India”, he said.
“Beginning my Africa tour with a visit to Mozambique”.
After Mr Modi held wide-ranging talks with Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi here, a “long-term” agreement was signed under which India will buy pulses from this country to plug domestic shortfalls and contain prices.
With South Africa, India cooperates and works closely in multi-lateral fora like BRICS, IBSA, G20 and BASIC.
On Thursday, Modi and Nyusi witnessed the signing of agreements in areas of drug trafficking, pulse trading and sports between India and Mozambique.
“Mozambique’s strengths are India’s needs and what Mozambique needs is in India”.

Of course, in what has now become a hallmark of his visits, the prime minister will also meet the Indian community in the country as well. The student community also expressed gratitude for the initiatives taken by India for Mozambique students.
