Dalai Lama cancels plans for October to take rest

The Dalai Lama, 80, is now on his way to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, reports Reuters. His Holiness cancelled his visit next month to the University of Massachusetts. This would have been the first time this Dalai Lama had been to Boulder since 1997.

The Lama was to have appeared at the Mullins Center October 25 and make private visits to Amherst and Smith colleges.

Citing medical reasons, the Dalai Lama is canceling his planned visit to Boulder and the University of Colorado next month.

Messages left by The Associated Press with the Office of Tibet, which represents the Dalai Lama in North America, were not immediately returned Friday.

His scheduled appearances in the USA also included Boulder, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah.

But doctors have ordered him to rest for weeks after the mystery health probe without releasing further details about his condition.

The Dalai Lama’s trip coincided with the visit of Pope Francis and Chinese President Xi Jinping to the US. The Tibetan Association of Philadelphia and the National Constitution Center confirmed the cancellation to Action News on Thursday.

The 7-minute BBC interview has an accompanying summary article on the company’s website, but his particular comments on women as the Dalai Lama were not included, Mirror United Kingdom reported.

“The most important thing is the well-being of His Holiness”, he told the AP.

Those who purchased tickets will receive refunds.

China insists that the Dalai Lama is nonetheless a “splittist”, and some younger Tibetan activists in exile have advocated a more militant approach.
