Kamal’s family alleged that he was subjected to torture in custody.

“Confess or we will kill your brother, they told me”, Nirmal said.

Mathur said that a case has been registered under sections of murder and SC/ST Act based on the complaint of family members of deceased.

Kamal Valmiki, a resident of Shiv Katra village, was found dead at Ahirwan police station Thursday afternoon after he was picked up along with another man, Raju Mistri, Wednesday in a case of loot.

Further, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police, Javed Ahmed while speaking to NDTV said, “A custody death is absolutely unacceptable”.

While Valmiki’s family members have filed an FIR against the station in charge and other police personnel for beating him to death, the police has claimed that he had committed suicide.

Reports said the policemen sent Kamal’s body for post-mortem under a different name, raising suspicion.

Yogendra Singh, 12 police personnel were suspended and five cops were booked for murder, Hindustan Times reported.

The action against the policemen comes as the ruling Akhilesh Yadav government is under fire from the Congress and the BJP for the law and order situation in the state – an issue that is expected to spell trouble for it in next year’s assembly elections. He had been brought in for interrogation two days ago in a case of burglary, along with another man, Raju Mistri.
