Six people were killed by tornadoes in Tennessee and one in Arkansas in recent days.
Residents are cleaning up and digging out across north Texas after a series of storms.
In the town of Rowlett near Garland, police spokesman Detective Cruz Hernandez said several people were injured although the exact number was not immediately clear. That death toll went up by three since Saturday night. His house only had minor damage, but was next to that were flattened. Dozens of homes and buildings, including two churches, were destroyed in Ellis County, the newspaper said. It’s unclear when power will be restored.
“Heavy snowfall amounts of 10 to 18 inches are forecast through Sunday evening across much of western/northwestern Texas, with 18 to 24 inches forecast across portions of New Mexico”.
NWS meteorologist Brendon Rubin-Oster warned: “It’s going to be quite risky for anyone exposed to these elements”.
In far West Texas, up to four inches of snow fell overnight in the Alpine area, with foot-deep drifts reported.
In Minnesota, four people died in a weather-related auto accident in Aitkin County, State Trooper Lt. Tiffani Nielson said.
Other parts of Texas were dealing with strong winds and precipitation, the weather service said. Arkansas and Alabama each reported one fatality.

Flash flooding closed roads across Alabama and trapped motorists in rapidly rising waters. A 22-year-old man who was in the auto remains missing, the station said. Cars that had been in driveways ended up inside homes after the tornado barreled through, witnesses said. Two families were barricaded in their homes, he said.
