Dallas Cowboys’ Randy Gregory enters drug rehab, expected to miss training camp

Owner Jerry Jones, COO Stephen Jones, and head coach Jason Garrett held their annual state of the team press conference in Oxnard, CA Friday morning, and they did not hold back when it came to some of the problems the team is now dealing with.

That doesn’t mean the Dallas owner is ready to dump Rolando McClain even though the enigmatic linebacker will be suspended the first 10 games on a substance-abuse violation, stayed away from the team most of the offseason and hasn’t reported to training camp in California.

You can sign him now but not require him to be at camp … or you can wait, and then figure out how to block him when he signs with, say, Washington. We have no official notification from your league. 1 of the new rules the National Football League has is if you get 2 unsportsmanlike conduct calls in a single game you are immediately ejected from the game I support that because you don’t need something like that going on while you are on the field.

Gregory is appealing the suspension for the latest failed test, per sources.

Jones would not discuss when the last time members of the organization spoke to McClain, but they have been in contact with the player’s agent, Pat Dye.

McClain and Gregory were headed for the reserve-did not report list, with Gregory skipping camp while in drug rehab. “There are no surprises here”. “The information we’ve seen would have him here in camp and involved with us”.

Back in May, Gregory appeared at the Cowboys’ Annual Sponsor Appreciation Golf Classic.

The Cowboys are already down linebacker Rolando McClain to a 10-game suspension and defensive end Demarcus Lawrence to a four-game suspension for violating the substance abuse policy. He missed the first four games of last season because of a substance-abuse suspension. That number would have been $250,000 past year. Fans will scream. Players will sprint to the field carried by the start of a new season.

Jones said the Cowboy will not change their philosophy on taking chances on risky players.

Projected as a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Gregory fell to 60th overall after failing a drug test at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“He (Gregory) is having care right as we speak”. He is among the best players in football, as evidenced by his 22-sack 2014 season, and among the highest paid as he enters the second year of a Chiefs-record six-year, $101 million deal. “I don’t want to start down them because some of them compromise our team and compromise other aspects of it, but your (salary-)cap situation has a big issue to do with a lot of decisions”. We are not buying bonds. This isn’t a widows portfolio we are dealing with him.

The risks may have felt as though they were worth the potential rewards, but it quickly became obvious this wasn’t going to be simple.

Elliott has not been charged or arrested for the incident and has denied the allegations, according to a police report that surfaced last Friday.
