Dallas runs out of time as Giants earn themselves a huge win

Dak Prescott’s National Football League debut was a roller-coaster ride that ended in heartbreak for his Dallas Cowboys, who lost 20-19 to the NFC East rival New York Giants in their season opener Sunday.

Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott moved the Dallas offense in his debut, early when the Cowboys kept settling for field goals, and late when a mental error in the final seconds prevented a try for a long kick in a 20-19 loss to the New York Giants.

Tony Romo won’t have to worry about rushing his comeback from a back injury, and if Sunday was any indication, Romo might need to worry about eventually getting his job back instead. Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott couldn’t get the ball snapped again. The 36-year-old is likely to miss at least another month after breaking a bone in his back in the preseason.

“Well, I was really touched”, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. “He felt he was covered, saw me moving around the pocket and found the open window”.

The Cowboys punted to the Giants with 3:57 left and the Giants were able to get two first downs before punting it back with 1:05 left. Even with the Giants focusing on the fourth overall pick, Bryant was held to one catch on Prescott’s first pass.

“I was just doing my best to get the team in a position to kick a field goal, but obviously I should have just followed the rules and gotten out of bounds. We’ll continue to attack Dez and go after them in those coverages when they give them to us”.

While a rookie starting quarterback may seem like a disadvantage for Dallas, Prescott actually looked very good during pre-season play.

With just 12 seconds remaining and no time outs left, Williams caught a Prescott pass, broke free from the nearest defender, and had an easy path to head out of bounds and give Dan Bailey a chance to win the game.

Something else had a familiar feeling to a year ago: one of those what-just-happened plays. When the Cowboys lose the season opener partly because their receiver fails to step out of bounds to stop the clock?

Terrance Williams of the Dallas Cowboys carries the ball against Kelvin Sheppard and Janoris Jenkins of the New York Giants on the last play of the game at AT&T Stadium on September 11, 2016 in Arlington, Texas.

What did you think of the Dallas Cowboys’ first game of the season? “That doesn’t minimize the loss”.

“We look through the windshield; we’re not looking through the rear-view mirror”, said McAdoo, who replaced Tom Coughlin after 12 seasons and two Super Bowl titles.
