Dame Maggie Smith responds to Jimmy Kimmel’s Emmy Award jokes

The awards show averaged an 8.4 overnight rating among households when it aired on ABC from Los Angeles Sunday night, according to Nielsen Media Research national ratings.

On the night the Emmys were given away, the “Game of Thrones” cast and creators equally awed as they won in the categories for best drama and best script for a drama, collecting 12 awards.

The show, based on George RR Martin’s novels, has now scooped 38 Emmys, beating Frasier’s record of 37 to become the most-awarded narrative show in Emmy history.

The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story also glittered, picking up a total of nine awards this season, including the prize for best limited series. Susanne Bier, the Danish director of the spy thriller The Night Manager, won for Best Directing in a Limited Series.

“Master of None” star Aziz Ansari, who penned an essay in June for the New York Times entitled “Why Trump Makes Me Scared for My Family”, quipped on stage, “I’ve decided I’m going withTrump”.

“I think “Veep” has torn down the wall between comedy and politics”, she said.

Smith showed two can play that game and put out a statement formally accepting her award.

Jeffrey Tambor captured his second consecutive best comedy actor trophy for “Transparent”, in which he plays a transgender character. She’s treating us like the People’s Choice Awards. Kimmel had joked early in the evening about Smith having never attending the award show despite winning multiple times.

“Maggie, if you want this it will be in the lost and found”.

When actor Courtney B. Vance won his Emmy for portraying Johnnie Cochran in The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, he showed support for Hillary Clinton. Rami Malek of “Mr Robot” and “Orphan Black” actress Tatiana Maslany overcame heavyweight competition to be named best actor and best actress, respectively.

Kimmel didn’t waste much time in his opening monologue before calling out “The Apprentice” producer Mark Burnett for helping launch the Trump phenomenon. Louis-Dreyfus apologized for what she called “the current political climate”, seven weeks before the presidential election. “I was very astonished and pleased to win the award”.

Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus also gave an emotional speech, talking about her recently deceased father.

Sterling K. Brown took home a statuette for his supporting actor role, while D.V. DeVincentis was recognized for the show’s writing.

John Oliver was a victor for his weekly comedic news commentary program “Last Week Tonight“, giving HBO its first Emmy in the variety talk series category since “Tracey Takes On.” was honored in 1997.

It was a big night for Kate McKinnon, who won her first Emmy for her work on Saturday Night Live, which seemed to come completely as a shock to the comedian.
