Plaza will play Lenny, a likeable and optimistic recovering addict and friend to David.

In the X-Men comics, David Haller is the son of Professor Charles Xavier. Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), and Jean Smart (Fargo) will all star in the project, which is now in the pilot stage, FX and Marvel announced Thursday. FX says the character is pretty depressed, until he “meets the girl of his dreams.” Hes also the lead on the series, playing the character who will become the titular Legion.

Given that Hawley has basically earned my eternal trust with two outstanding seasons of television these past two years, this is easily one of my most anticipated television series and could potentially produce the first truly *great* comics-based television program.

Though we think he’s better suited to be the next 007, it looks like former Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens is set to transform into a superhero instead.

Kinberg has talked much about the freedom that the TV format will give the likes of Haller in telling these stories, and that freedom is likely to be even greater with the recent news that the Legion show will not take place in the existing X-Men cinematic universe. While details on Keller’s character have not been revealed, Smart will portray Melanie, a “nurturing, demanding therapist with a sharp mind and unconventional methods”. Since departing the show after Season 3, he has been focused on features including The Ghost and Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb, and will next be seen as the Beast in the Disney live-action Beauty And The Beast opposite Emma Watson. The Noah Hawley-produced and written pilot is expected to begin production in March, and we should be hearing whether or not Legion is good enough to move forward soon after.
