Dan Straily goes 6 innings as Reds beat Rangers 3-0

Derek Holland makes his return to the rotation for the Texas Rangers when they begin a two-game interleague series against the host Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. The Rangers entered Monday with a six-game lead over Seattle in the American League West but were coming off two straight losses at Tampa Bay over the weekend.

In a game that featured exactly seven fewer home runs than Monday’s, Joey Votto drove in two runs and catcher Tucker Barnhart a third to give Reds a 3-0 win.

Beltran’s ball died on the warning track in the glove of right fielder Scott Schebler, signaling that this game was going to be different.

The Rangers will have to make a corresponding move on their 40-man roster before Tuesday’s game for Holland, who has been on the 60-day disabled list because of left shoulder inflammation.

Holland’s only walk set up the run. Recalled from Triple-A Louisville when Michael Lorenzen went on the bereavement list, Adleman blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers on five hits over five innings on Friday to pick up his second major-league victory and earn another start. The Rangers had their best chance in the seventh against Raisel Iglesias after Mitch Moreland and Nomar Mazara opened with singles. Among their near misses was an Ian Desmond line drive in the fifth inning that hit just off the right-field wall just foul and Carlos Beltran getting robbed of a leadoff double in the sixth on a tremendous running catch by Billy Hamilton. The one walk, though, came to start the sixth inning, and Tyler Holt came around to score on a two-out single by Joey Votto. “We got through them relatively quickly and (Texas starter Derek) Holland was pitching like Tom Browning – get it and throw it”. Matt Bush walked the leadoff batter in the eighth, which led to the Reds’ final run.

Straily held the potent Texas Rangers offense in check in his 6 IP, keeping them off the board entirely while allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks against his 5 strikeouts. Votto is batting.438 in August and is bidding to become the first Cincinnati player in more than 100 years to hit above.400 in back-to-back months.2.
