Dangerous new summer trend could increase chances of cancer by 50 percent

Most of us know that sunburn is potentially unsafe to our health, but that hasn’t stopped some people ditching suncream in a bid to follow the latest trend.

“I’ve definitely seen it advertised online, where they have little tracings and they just mark it out, the part that’s covered”, says Dr. Aurora Badia, a dermatologist at Florida Skin Center, who first learned about sunburn art years ago.

Sunburn art is a new trend where people are using sunscreen to draw designs on their bodies before going into the Sunday.

Sometimes, sunbathers will even put temporary tattoos on their skin to use them as an outline for the sunburn art. And the practice as a whole is making the medical community cringe.

Experts say no suntan from sun exposure is healthy, as any change in skin color can be a sign of potential skin damage. However, dermatologists are warning this trend could get deadly, claiming that sunburn art can increase the risk of developing skin cancer and lead to premature aging.

“It’s as if more virginal skin is getting this intense sun exposure, which all of the data show is much more unsafe than chronic sun exposure”.

As per doctors, it is recommended to wear SPF 30 sun block while stepping out and re-apply it while sweating or after into the water.

“You do not need to have SPF 100; if you apply 30 SPF and you apply it correctly with reapplication as needed”.

An estimated 73,000 cases of invasive melanoma will be diagnosed in the United States in 2015, according to the American Cancer Society.

He said that it was really obvious that sunburn will do two things to an individual: it gives an individual lines and freckles and wrinkles and it also causes skin cancer, especially melanoma. Proving sunburns and sun safety is not something to play around with.
