The series, which will be limited to 20 episodes, is based on the Jonathan Franzen novel about the interconnected stories of a diverse group of people.

Purity is billed as a story of “youthful idealism, extreme loyalty and cold-blooded murder”.

In terms of Purity, Variety reports that Showtime fended off heated competition from both Netflix and FX to secure the limited series, appointing Todd Field (In the Bedroom, Little Children) to write and direct all 20 episodes in the process. Purity doesn’t have to worry about that-this is a straight-to-series order, so this is definitely happening. Stay tuned for more info, including an air-date and more casting, expected soon! Scott Rudin and Eli Bush will also executive produce. He is best-known to audiences across the globe for his role as James Bond AKA Agent 007 in the blockbuster franchise.

The story centres on a young woman, named Pip, as she travels around the US and South America in years following her college graduation and meets a variety of diverse characters along the way. “I whipped through it in a week”, said David Nevins, the president and CEO of Showtime Networks. Franzen’s detailed plotted novel is packed with characters who are hungry for the truth but also desperate to hide it. All three writers will produce, along with Craig, Scott Rudin (The Social Network), and Eli Bush (The Newsroom). Whether that will conflict with Bond 25, if Craig will even return to the role, remains to be seen, but we can be sure the answer will come as Purity goes into development. From STASI offspring to Oakland anarchists, Franzen tracks his characters’ landscapes from East Berlin and the Bolivian jungle to East Harlem walk-ups and the California Redwoods in a decades-spanning tragicomedy that builds to a contemporary climax.
