Daniel Fells May Have Foot Amputated
The New York Giants have referred to Daniel Fells’ MRSA infection as “serious” since Day 1, as any MRSA case is. He has had five surgeries since that time, a source told NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, and more surgeries are expected as doctors try to save Fells’ foot, which could be at risk if the infection spreads.

Fells has been hospitalized for more than a week as he battles a persistent Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection that necessitated being placed in the Intensive Care Unit on Friday. They are working hard on it, but apparently it could end up that they have to remove all or part of his foot.
Fells, 32, is an eight-year National Football League veteran who has played for the Falcons, Rams, Broncos and Patriots before signing in 2014 with the Giants. Doctors found he had an MRSA infection around his ankle. That could have the gravest of consequences.
Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon told ESPN.com that it “is a serious situation that has been taken seriously from the beginning”.
“We’re all praying for him, believe me”, head coach Tom Coughlin said.

The Giants have already declared Fells out for the season. Fells and the doctors are likely trying to stop the infection and save his foot, rather than worrying about his football career. The entire facility, including the locker room, meeting rooms and trainers’ room, was scrubbed, and players were alerted to watch for any warning signs that their health might be compromised. Meanwhile, Fells remains away from the team, waging his own fight.
