Daniel Murphy’s homer sees Mets past Dodgers

In Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the New York Mets the Dodgers failed to capitalize multiple times with runners in scoring position and as a result they will not be moving on to the National League Championship Series.

Jacob deGrom, the Game 1 victor over Kershaw, will pitch on full rest, just like Game 2 victor Greinke in the winner-take-all Game 5. If the proper call of interference was made, the Mets would’ve taken a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning of Game 2 and would likely have swept the series on Monday night at Citi Field. It isn’t about how the Mets are going to hit Kenley Jansen if it comes to it, it’s about how the Dodgers are going to hit Noah Syndergaard and/or Jeurys Familia if it comes to it. The victor will advance to the NLCS while the loser will go home. Thanks to a few heads-up baserunning in the fourth inning, he advanced from first to third on a walk before coming around to score on a game-tying sacrifice fly from Travis d’Arnaud.

“I just think what him and Clayton [Kershaw] have meant to our club over the last three years is just that one-two punch”, Mattingly said.

Murphy’s opposite-field RBI double in the first drove in the game’s first run. The Mets’ bats woke up in the sixth inning, and the team eventually won, 8-5. On the other side, the Kansas City Royals smashed the Houston Astros 7-2, leaving no team left in Texas in the offseason. They quickly donned black T-shirts and exchanged hugs and high-fives while a small group of orange and blue-clad fans shouted, “Let’s go Mets!”, the only noise in a stadium that emptied quickly. As for Greinke, he allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings while striking out nine batters.

Greinke has pitched at least six innings in all 33 of his starts with a 1.66 ERA that led the majors.

“I’m not sure who was supposed to cover (third base), but no one was there”, Murphy said.

Despite a record $289 million payroll, the Dodgers remained without a World Series title since 1988.

Eventually all good things must come to an end and tonight for the Los Angeles Dodgers it was their season.

For additional team radio station affiliates: Mets and Dodgers. He was chased from the game by a long home run by the eventual most valuable player of that Series, Reggie Jackson.

“It would be nice to be back”, he said in a quiet clubhouse. “You can really count on what you’re going to get from them 90-something percent of the time”.
