Daniel Sturridge: I’m playing in wrong position for Liverpool

Asked whether it was a position he was happy playing, Sturridge replied: “Well, I have to do a job for the team”.

Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge has spoken of his discomfort at being deployed on the flanks by manager Jurgen Klopp.

During a frustrating afternoon for the Reds, Sturridge was substituted in the 65th minute at Turf Moor, and once again he was played on the right in Tuesday night’s 5-0 hammering over Burton Albion in the EFL Cup.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Klopp uses Sturridge going forward with him being made fully aware that he isn’t best pleased playing out wide.

“There are easier draws, I don’t know exactly who plays against who but Burton are quite ambitious, and for them it’s a big game”, he added. I’m on autopilot there. Then you have these players who are really skilled in finishing situations in and around the box. I just have to do a job for the team. “Of course I have to make decisions between players, but the most important job I have to do is to find the balance and the right solutions”.

“The team was good today and we want to keep going for the next game of the season”.

“Saturday was not the best game of football Daniel has ever played but even in a game like this he could have scored”.

File picture shows Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp talking to Daniel Sturridge during their Barclays Premier League match against Stoke City at Anfield, April 10, 2016. “You can’t play the same as you do as a centre-forward”. “It’s just a different way”, he continued. It is not that you have to play there, it is flexible football. It is not a fixed position (where you) stay outside and wait until you get the ball – especially not in Daniel’s case.

“It’s not that we have to pat ourselves on the back every day at signing him”, he told Press Association sport.

“That’s absolutely no problem”.

“It is a different regime, a different coaching style”, he said.

‘Daniel is a very smart player at hiding himself in positions where it’s hard to defend and that’s very often on the wing. That’s why I said we have still to work on a lot of things.
