Daniel Sturridge set to fly back from US and face United

Liverpool have enjoyed a strong start to the season with a maximum six points from their opening two games, and will now be handed a further boost with the news that striker Daniel Sturridge is making excellent progress in his recovery from injury, the Daily Mirror reports. It will be up to Brendan Rodgers to determine whether he will want to take that risk or will prefer to stick with Christian Benteke as a sole striker for the Reds’ visit to Old Trafford. The England global needed surgery in early May to sort out a torn muscle sustained during a Premier League match against Manchester United on March 22.

The 25-year-old, who underwent a hip operation in New York in May, has been assessed in Boston this week by our head of performance (Glen Driscoll) and head of physiotherapy (Chris Morgan) – who are, according to reports in The Guardian, confident that Sturridge is well on track.

The 25-year-old is not yet ready to resume playing for Liverpool yet, but is likely to be fit after England’s next round of Euro 2016 qualifiers versus San Marino and Switzerland in early September.

Scans have revealed no break in his foot after having played through the 1-0 win over Bournemouth with an injury, but the club captain remains a doubt to face Arsenal.

He played just 12 Premier League games in total and only scored four goals, but Sturridge was carrying an injury throughout the entire term.
