Date set for Fury-Klitschko rematch

The long-awaited heavyweight rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko will go ahead on October 29, Hennessy Sports has confirmed.

Fury beat Klitschko in November to claim the WBA, WBO and IBF titles.

Klitschko, who had been unbeaten for 11 years until his defeat to Fury in 2015, tweeted: “Finally the rematch is fixed”.

They will meet again October 29 at the Manchester Arena in Fury’s hometown of Manchester, England.

Peter Fury, Tyson’s uncle, had previously revealed on Twitter that the fight had been effectively agreed upon.

He subsequently was stripped of the IBF version of the belt for agreeing to an immediate rematch with Klitschko and refusing to face that organisation’s mandatory challenger.

Nearly a year after he dethroned the long-reigning champion in Dusseldorf, Fury will enjoy home advantage at the Manchester Arena for the much-delayed second meeting.

“This is one of the best venues worldwide and has already seen many great fights. As Tyson’s promoter I have 100% confidence that he will retain his titles in front of his fans and make it another memorable night for British boxing to remember”.

“Team Klitschko is very happy that after Fury’s postponements we finally have a new date”, said Bernd Boente, Klitschko’s manager.

The Manchester-born fighter will have the advantage of a home crowd in October, not something he enjoyed in Germany where the majority of the spectators were supporting Klitschko.

The ban was subsequently lifted and in line with UK Anti-Doping agency rules, Fury’s case is now set to be fast-tracked in order that his position can be clarified before the scheduled bout with Klitschko. That should happen before next month’s fight at the Manchester Arena.
