David Bowie Death: Michael C. Hall ‘Lazarus’ Cast Issue Statement As Tributes

The two-time Grammy Award victor was remembered by The Recording Academy as a “Renaissance man and visionary artist”. Never one to shy from diversity Bowie has contributed to almost every genre of music in some way or form from his early days starting out learning how to play saxophone after being inspired by such African American jazz legends such as John Coltrane and Charles Mingus to going on to generating dozens of hits to producing albums for artists such as Lou Reed and working along such renowned black artists such as Tina Turner, Goldie, and more.

News of his demise broke with a stunning statement Monday on his social media accounts: “David Bowie died peacefully today (Sunday) surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer”.

His 2014 win made him the oldest recipient of a Brit in the show’s history, but he was noticeably absent from the ceremony, sending Kate Moss in an original Ziggy Stardust outfit to accept the trophy on his behalf.

Funeral plans have not yet been revealed, but the Mirror reported that he may be laid to rest in NY.

David Bowie created such a vast body of work in his almost five-decade career it’s hard to narrow his most noteworthy albums down to five (or even 10).

The news comes as sales of his latest album doubled overnight and six more of his classic albums re-entered the album charts Top 40. The singer’s final album was released on Friday to coincide with his 69th birthday, and was already on track to reach the top spot.

2014’s Nothing Has Changed is on course to re-enter at number 7, his 1969/1974 Best Of (released in 1997) is at 13 and 2002’s Best Of Bowie sits at 27.

An icon who shaped pop culture and fashion, Bowie wasn’t afraid to let go and reinvent.

British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted that Bowie’s death is “a huge loss”. “Kanye West stating that David Bowie was “…one of my most important influences, so fearless, so creative, he gaves magic for a life time”. In recent years, Bowie’s exquisite taste found him supporting the indie scene’s next generation, appearing on material by TV on the Radio and performing live with Arcade Fire.
