Following David’s death, his 25th studio album Blackstar has charged up the United Kingdom music charts proving just how much of an inspiration he was, and continues to be.
“Blackstar” was released on his 69th birthday last Friday, only days before his death, and is projected to sell about 130,000 total equivalent album units, according to Billboard.
A source in America said: “In many respects you don’t need a memorial or service to remember David by… you have his music instead”. Over the last few years – with him living in NY and me in London – our connection was by email.
There are some obvious comparisons stylistically between Gaga and Bowie, which came to light in the interview amongst commentary on her new song with Diane Warren.
Although “black stars” are usually found in the breast, and can show evidence that the radial scar they form around is benign, rather than cancerous, for many fans the discovery has significance with Bowie’s choice of album title.
Producer and longtime friend, Tony Visconti, recently said, “He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift”.
Belgian theatre director Ivo Van Hove, who worked closely with Bowie on his musical “Lazarus” which opened in NY in December, told Dutch public radio NPO that Bowie had been suffering from liver cancer. We knew each other for over 40 years…
“He was such a visual creative artist, and I photographed him two or three times just in passing through his career, but we never did a creative sitting”, said the photographer, known for her portraits of the stars.
