The lyrics in the title track, also depicted as ★, are also telling: “Something happened on the day he died / Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside / Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried (I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar)”.

David Bowie died from liver cancer, a friend has revealed.

Belgian theatre director Ivo Van Hove, who worked closely with Bowie on his musical “Lazarus” which opened in NY in December, told Dutch public radio NPO that Bowie had been suffering from liver cancer. “His death is a huge loss”.

An emotional Fallon also started The Tonight Show discussing Bowie, by sharing stories of how he traded jokes with the “Ziggy Stardust” singer over email and how fans should check out his latest album, Blackstar. In one of his songs, “Lazarus“, he starts it off with the following. It will feature singers such as Cyndi Lauper, The Roots and The Mountain Goats. It ends with the poignant.

“I’m so glad I chose that to be my profession, It’s been just terrific”.

Spotify has reported that global streams of Bowie’s music were up 2,822 per cent since Monday – totalling more than 6.5 million listens – and Life on Mars, Heroes, Let’s Dance and Blackstar have all entered the site’s top 10 chart. But, of course, his fans weren’t aware that they were hints because, according to Bowie’s friend, he wanted the world to believe that he was healthy.

“It comes in waves, you know”.

Bowie’s son Duncan Jones, tweeted, “Very sorry and sad to say it’s true”.

While she has not made an official statement since her husband’s death, Iman did take to Instagram to share her sadness in a series of messages.

Her last post read: “The struggle is real but so is God”.
