Mr Cameron revealed it would be hard to continue as a backbencher amid the “realities of modern politics”.

Mr Cameron is an MP for Witney in Oxfordshire, where a by-election will now have to take place.

Former prime minister David Cameron has stood down as a Member of Parliament with immediate effect.

The former prime minister has been MP for Witney since 2001.

“There’ll be a by-election and I’ll give the conservative candidate my full support”.

“I think everything you do will become a big distraction and a big diversion from what the government needs to do for our country”.

“I fully support Theresa May and have every confidence that Britain will thrive under her strong leadership”.

“I want to thank everybody here in West Oxfordshire who have been so supportive”, he said.

Mr Cameron said he would not be moving away from the constituency, where he has made his home with wife Samantha and their children.

Asked by the BBC whether his resignation had anything to with May’s plans for education reform, he said: “This decision has got nothing to do with any one individual issue”.

“I will continue to support the local causes and charities that mean so much to me and many others in this handsome and enterprising part of our country”.
