David Cameron is expected to go to Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, where he will present his resignation to the Queen.
Even before entering Downing Street, May, now 59, made history by becoming the longest serving Home Secretary in more than 100 years.
UK Conservative Party leader Theresa May, who will succeed outgoing Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday, is unlikely to resemble Margaret Thatcher in her policies, a Russian expert said on Tuesday.
It was Cameron’s last Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, ahead of giving his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II.
“I came into Downing Street to confront our problems as a country and lead people through hard decisions so we could reach better times“, he said.
May will be the second woman to hold the prime minister’s position in the history of the United Kingdom after Thatcher, who served as prime minister and head of the country’s conservative party from 1979 to 1990.
Senior Brexiteer Chris Grayling will be rewarded for his role running Mrs May’s campaign.
May, his interior minister for the past six years, was declared the new Conservative leader on Monday after junior energy minister Andrea Leadsom, her only remaining challenger for the post, withdrew from the contest.
Observers are keen to see if she appoints former London Mayor Boris Johnson and Justice Secretary Michael Gove, onetime Conservative leadership contenders who jointly headed the “leave” campaign but then turned on one another.
Mrs May, a founder of the Women2Win group to increase the number of female MPs, is keen to see more women in “prominent” roles.
A spokeswoman for Mrs May said: “Civil servants have already been charged with finding a building to house the Brexit department – an indication of Theresa’s commitment to get on with delivering the verdict of the European Union referendum”.
Since the vote, she has repeatedly said that “Brexit means Brexit” and her backers say she is determined to make the exit a success.
After assuming office, Theresa May will set about naming her own front bench team.
“I think that should be the same for everyone”.
How did we get here?
Despite pressure from other European Union capitals to quickly start negotiating the terms of Britain’s exit, Ms May has said she would not be rushed into triggering article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty, the formal step that will kickstart the process.
Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has told lawmakers that finalizing a separation from Europe could take up to six years and potentially involve individual parliamentary ratification by all 27 other members of the bloc.
“The last thing I’d say is that you can achieve a lot of things in politics”, Cameron said in his final remarks to parliament as prime minister.

“But we must also acknowledge that, despite all his promises, he leaves the country in a state of insecurity and huge economic uncertainty”. She has shown a tough stance on immigration, suggesting that the country cut net migration numbers by baring British citizens from bringing children and spouses into the country unless they earn more than 18,000 pounds – about $24,000 – to show they can support them.
