“As a former Prime Minister, you become a reason of distraction and create problems for the incumbent government”, he went on to say.

“I would like to thank the party workers, volunteers, councillors and supporters for all they have done to help me”.

This evening Theresa May said in a statement: “I was proud to serve in David Cameron’s Government – and under his leadership we achieved great things”.

He called time on six years as Prime Minister the day after the European Union referendum, arguing that he was not the right person to be “the captain that steers our country to its next destination”. I want Witney to have a new MP who can play a full part in parliamentary and political life without being a distraction.

“It has been an honour to serve the people of Witney and West Oxfordshire for the last 15 years”.

“I’m going to go on living locally, I’ll go on supporting local causes and the local charities that make this such a great place in our country”, he added.

He said he wanted to forge a “life outside Westminster” – sparking speculation that he wants to pursue a lucrative career options like Tony Blair.

He claimed not to have made any “firm” decision on his next move, but he wanted to continue to contribute to public service and “to continue campaigning on local, national and worldwide issues that were part of my prime ministership where I think we made progress but there’s a lot more to be done”.

There has been surprise and irritation among David Cameron and George Osborne’s political circle at how fast and how far the new prime minister has gone to dissociate herself from his government in which, after all, she was home secretary for six years.

Asked whether he would stand at the time he replied: “That is very much my intention”.

Cameron had pledged to support May, who “has got off to a cracking start” since she became the nation’s leader in July.

“Obviously I have my own views about certain issues. That’s really the point”.

“The country made a decision, a decision I advised against, but nonetheless the decision has been made and I want the government to successfully pursue that decision and get it right”. I want Witney to have an MP that can play a full role in parliamentary and political life in a way that I think I would find very hard, if not impossible.
