David Cameron has warned Londoners against electing a Labour mayor, as he stressed it was vital to maintain a close relationship between government and City Hall.

The Prime Minister insisted that it was vital to have a Conservative mayor and government working “hand in glove”.

“Are we Conservatives fighting to destroy Zac or fighting to win this election?”

The Tory MP for Richmond Park was interviewed on LBC earlier and said: “I’m hoping to do a Leicester City and zoom in from behind and win on May 5”.

The first phase of the effort, which generated alarm in March, concerned campaign literature mailed to London voters presumed to be Hindus or Sikhs, based on their last names, that seemed created to exploit anti-Muslim tensions among different faith groups from the Indian subcontinent.

Mr Cameron briefly joined in with supporters’ chants of “back Zac” during his speech, in which he praised the work achieved by the outgoing Mr Johnson as “outstanding”.

The trust fund Tory’s willingness to use racial innuendo and smear tactics in his bid to stop Labour’s Sadiq Khan, will haunt him long after his miserable campaign comes to an end on Thursday night. His action plan will deliver for all Londoners – the houses you want, the transport you need, the safer streets and greener environment we all want.

He said there could be no place for anyone holding the views of Ken Livingstone, who plunged the party into turmoil last week with his claim that Hitler supported Zionism in the 1930s.

Labour’s candidate for London Mayor Sadiq Khan has maintained his poll lead against Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith with two days to go before the election, despite fears a row over anti-Semitism in the Labour Party could have damaged his chances at the ballot box. The scandal has seen Bradford West MP Naz Shah, former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone as well as a number of councillors be suspended from the party.
