David Luiz can be my Bonucci & Barzagli, claims Conte

I am seeing great commitment from him.

He said: “David Luiz is 29, a fantastic age for him to become one of the best defenders in the world”. Now I’m going back to my original position of No.8, attacking and defending from box to box, which is my original role and the one I like the most. Now I’m the coach of David Luiz.

“I think that every player, until the end of their career, can improve”.

Luiz can play in midfield as well as defence, but Conte views him only as a centre-back and will consider adjusting Chelsea’s formation to accommodate him, Terry and Cahill.

“[Conte] is giving me a lot of confidence and I’m doing very well”, Oscar said.

Indeed, Antonio Conte claims that he can develop the player, who re-signed for Chelsea on transfer deadline day, to become one of the best defenders in the world as a cross between the highly rated Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli, both of Juventus.

“We know that David can improve in defensive situations, but it’s good and I’m very happy he stays here”. I’m very happy when I have a player with a great personality.

“Today we had the first training [this week] with all the players, because Willian arrived after training yesterday, but he had the possibility to have the same training with the assistant coach”, Conte told reporters.

And, although Conte acknowledges David Luiz needs to work on areas of his game, he believes the 29-year-old still has time to improve.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has admitted that he had not initially planned to sign David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain.

“David can improve in defensive situations but he is a good guy, a positive guy for the changing room”. He wants to play for Chelsea.

“It’s good to have that spirit back and we are looking to improve on that front”. I say that from my experience as a footballer. “If someone thinks that this player loses his concentration during the game, my task is to improve him in that aspect”.

“I think you can see that last season we were lacking a bit of resilience”.

“But we needed centre-backs so, for that reason, we bought him”.

“I don’t like to speak about the favourite because last season showed us that a team not favourite can win the title”, he said.
