David Luiz gets No.30 as Chelsea announce new squad numbers

Chelsea has agreed terms with Paris St Germain for defender David Luiz’s return to Stamford Bridge for a fee of around £34m.

Luiz signed a three-year contract after Chelsea paid a reported fee of 30 million pounds (39 million dollars), two years after leaving the London club for France in a 50 million-pound deal. “I love this club, that’s why I am here”, Luiz told www.chelseafc.com.

The west London club said the Brazilian had yet to agree personal terms and pass a medical but manager Antonio Conte appeared to be close to securing the extra defensive cover he had wanted since starting work at Stamford Bridge last month. “So I can not wait to wear the shirt and play in Stamford Bridge again”.

Luiz had first joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2011 and the Brazil global won the FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League during his initial spell at Stamford Bridge.

Luiz said: “I’m delighted to return to Chelsea”.

Luiz, who also played a key role as Chelsea won the 2013 Europa League, originally joined the Blues from Benfica in January 2011. Additionally, in 2015, he scored against his former club, knocking Chelsea out in the Champions League round of 16.

Luiz has helped Paris Saint-Germain to win two Ligue 1 titles during his time in the French capital, but it’s fair to say that he didn’t convince everybody despite keeping fellow Brazilian Marquinhos out of the side.

Corrections and clarifications: This story’s headline earlier erroneously stated that Chelsea had signed David Luiz.

However, the maverick defender then fell behind John Terry and Gary Cahill in the centre-back pecking order. He’s probably coming back a worse player than when he left. “Our line is well formed, no wonder why Chelsea offered more than €50m for one of our defenders”. It’s time for me to win some titles.
