David Luiz Targeting Trophy Haul at Chelsea After Rejoining on Deadline Day

Luiz was sold to PSG for a world record fee for a defender for £50 million in 2014.

The formalities of the deal were concluded without issue and Chelsea confirmed on their official website shortly after 11pm on Wednesday night that Luiz has re-joined the club on a three-year contract.

A deal was completed to re-sign the Brazilian defender from Paris St-Germain shortly before Wednesday night’s transfer deadline.

But with his position at PSG under threat from compatriot Marquinhos, new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has brought him back to Stamford Bridge for a reported fee of 32 million pounds.

Spending by Premier League clubs has broken through the one billion pounds (US$1.3 billion) barrier in one window for the first time and English sides remained busy on deadline day. “It’s time for me to win some titles”, Alonso said.

The 25-year-old is Conte’s fifth signing since taking charge at Stamford Bridge, following the arrivals of France midfielder N’Golo Kante, Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi and Portuguese goalkeeper Eduardo.

Premier League champions Leicester City also grabbed headlines with the club-record £28m acquisition of Sporting Lisbon striker Islam Slimani, reuniting the Algerian with global team-mate Riyad Mahrez at the King Power Stadium.

Finally, Wales’ Euro 2016 hero Hal Robson-Kanu found himself a new club after his Reading contract expired at the end of last season, the 27-year-old snapped up by Tony Pulis’ West Brom.

Asked if he still had some “unfinished business” after winning numerous trophies but missing out on a Premier League medal during his first spell at the club, Luiz explained.

But the defender, now 29, seems to be the only one who wasn’t surprised by the transfer.

To be sure, Luiz is certainly not a bad player.

“It suggests to me that Conte is looking to get another centre-back in so he has the luxury of playing three at the back sometimes”.

It will pay Chelsea 5 million euros ($5.6 million) a season for the winger, who also spent last season on loan in Turin.

Burnley said it broke its transfer record for the second time this month in signing Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick from second-tier Derby but the fee wasn’t disclosed. As well as Hart’s loan move, Juan Cuadrado returned to Juventus from Chelsea and Luis Alberto joined Lazio from Liverpool on permanent deals.
