Wayne Rooney is substituted during England’s Euro 2016 defeat to Iceland.

“We will adapt our style to play different opponents. My coaching technique is to try to give players the opportunity to win football matches, home or away, and make them aware of the opposition”, he said. It’s a very bitter experience, as we all know, but that bit of drive the players should keep. “It may be the same system [as at youth level] but with a tweak here or there”.

SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is backing Sam Allardyce to be a big success for England and has not ruled out joining him in the coaching set up.

And reflecting on this summer’s disappointment he said: “I think they [could have lifted the trophy] had they all performed to their best, which they suggested they were going to beforehand”.

“Potential is a word I don’t like to use too much because this is the England first team and you want the players to be producing top quality in every single game”. The players did a great job in the way they finished last season, and how well they performed to make sure they weren’t in trouble.

“Certainly for me it was a very nervous occasion, to wait and see who was successful”.

“I am extremely honoured to be appointed England manager especially as it is no secret that this is the role I have always wanted”.

The Scotsman is determined to change the mindset at the Stadium of Light – he wants the team compete further up the table and avoid another relegation scrap.

“Sammy Lee is going me for a second time and I will rely on his global experience”.

“Man management is my biggest asset, to help players enjoy themselves and be better than they already are”.

Asked what he would bring to the job, Allardyce said, “Man-management, I think”.

“It was 10 years since I was last interviewed [for the position] and to sit here is obviously a huge, huge thrill for me”. “I think the bonding of the team is exceptionally important”.

Far from wishing to bury the memory of a humiliating last-16 loss against Iceland, Allardyce wants this humbling setback to inspire his players when they begin their Russian Federation 2018 qualifying campaign against Slovakia in September. “Then we can focus on the in-depth issues”. We all had great hopes becuase of the way we qualified for them.
