According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Ortiz is planning to retire after the 2016 season.
Ortiz will turn 40 years old Wednesday (tomorrow) and next year will be his 20th year in the league.
Ortiz hit 447 of his 503 home runs as a designated hitter, a statistic that opens up his Hall of Fame candidacy to significant debate.
Remarkably, Ortiz has not slowed much with age.
Ortiz proved last season that he is still capable of producing at a high level, as he hit.
Boston Red Sox’s David Ortiz wears special batting gloves in his second at-bat against the Tampa Bay Rays during the third inning of a baseball game Saturday, September 12, 2015, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

He will be remembered as one of the best clutch hitters of all-time as a three-time World Series champion and the 2013 World Series MVP. Five days after the Boston Marathon bombing, Ortiz took the microphone during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park and told the crowd: “This is our (bleeping) city”.
