Price, only the third pitcher in baseball history to make a third consecutive opening-day start for a different team, struck out two batters in each of the first four innings. The last, by Brock Holt, gave the Red Sox a 3-2 lead. Kluber was awesome in the first two innings but was hurt by allowing too many baserunners.

Although Shaw and Holt singled in the second, the Red Sox could not initially score against Indians starter and 2014 Cy Young victor Corey Kluber.

Price didn’t disappoint Boston’s faithful, who envision him turning the Red Sox back into a power. And the addition of Price, 30, a hard-throwing left-hander with a 105-56 big league record, should have the Red Sox in the running for a postseason berth this season.

Buchholz suffered the elbow injury on July 10 and was transferred to the 60-day disabled list 18 days later. The Sox got off to an early start, but the Indians were able to tie the game down the stretch.

Clay Buchholz was 7-7 in 2015 for the Red Sox with a 3.26 ERA.In 113.1 IP he allowed 48 runs, 41 earned, with 107 strikouts and 23 walks. Jeff Manship, in relief of Kluber, got Betts to ground into an inning-ending double play.In 5 1/3 innings, Kluber gave up four runs and nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

“With each successive start here in camp, his arm strength has continued to improve”, John Farrell told MLB’s official website. This was merely a win over the Cleveland Indians, a team that finished one game above.

“We did some good things on the bases, had a lot of good swings, and on a day when there wasn’t great (weather), David was outstanding”, Farrell said.

How many starts he can be expected to make remains in question. “We have 161 more games to go”. Bauer eventually got out of the inning with no further damage. “So that’s been good”. In his last 10, Carlos Carrasco was 4-4 with a 2.48 ERA and. The Venezuela native turned 29 last month and is expected to take another step forward after finishing behind only Clayton Kershaw, Chris Sale and Max Scherzer in strikeout rate last season.

“I’ve been doing this for quite a while now”, Price said. “Not having to talk about it is probably the best thing that’s happened for the simple fact of, yeah, we have our No. 1 and then everybody else falls where they may after that”.

Slugger David Ortiz began his Red Sox farewell tour, with two hits, including a two-run homer, and Mookie Betts was his usual spectacular self with two hits, including a two-run homer. Rookie Travis Shaw went two for five, but fanned three times in the game.

Ortiz batted just. 178 during spring training, but he’s locked in now that games matter.

“That’s why he’s got Jordans on his feet”, a thankful Price said. “I know what he did at the end of the season”. He’s saving it all for the season. “The opposing pitchers don’t want to see him in that box”.
