Previously hosted by Terry Wogan, Les Dawson and Lily Savage, the game sees two contestants compete head to head to match the answers of six celebrity panellists to fill in a series of blank statements.

Earlier this year, Alec Baldwin launched a revival of USA quiz Match Game, which was the inspiration for Blankety Blank.

In more recent times the show was hosted by Paul O’Grady from 1997 to 2002 and regularly saw his alter ego, Lilly Savage, on the show and Les Dawson was the host until 1990.

Britain’s Got Talent judge David, 45, said he hoped the Christmas special would introduce the show to younger viewers.

David has some experience of “Blankety Blank” having appeared on a Comic Relief charity edition in 2011.

David Walliams is to front a revival of quiz show Blankety Blank in a one-off Christmas special of the TV quiz show – the first full episode since 2002.

He said: “David Walliams is the ideal host for this – he’ll bring his comedic talents and warm personality to the show”.

An insider said: “Blankety Blank was such a huge hit in the 80s and ITV bosses want to replicate that success”.

“UK audiences love a good game show”.

He took to Twitter on Tuesday to break the news that he’ll be the new host.

Blankety Blank is expected to air in December.

SIR Terry Wogan died on Sunday aged 77 and we’re taking a look back at his lengthy career, from presenting BBC Radio 1 to presenting Children in Need for 35 years.

Another added: “Blankety Blank won’t be the same on ITV, as the dreaded advert break will ruin the smooth flow of the prog”.
