David Wright: Neck ailment a herniated disc

“With the condition he’s been playing in and the condition he’s in right now, yeah, I’m concerned about it”, Collins said Monday.

“He knows how important he is, especially the way he’s been swinging lately”, Collins said.

Wright has missed considerable time with injuries during his 13-year career, including 28 games last season after being diagnosed with spinal stenosis.

At first glance, Mets captain David Wright looked like a mummy, moving stiffly with a cumbersome wrap protecting the herniated disc in his neck.

Wright, 33, did not play Monday for the third consecutive day.

Collins acknowledged that if Wright does go on the DL, the Mets would consider other moves, such as having players switch positions.

The Mets medical staff initially tried to treat the injury with oral anti-inflammatory medication, but after two days Wright reported only slight improvement, not enough to allow him to play.

“This guy has been a special player in baseball, certainly being captain and the face of this organization. David has a lot of baseball left in him because of the way he prepares and gets himself ready, but it’s hard to see him going through what he’s going through, and to see as good as he was”, Collins said.

Collins said as far as he’s aware, surgery has not been discussed. He has struck out 55 times in 137 at-bats and drawn 26 walks. Wright was out of the lineup for the third day in a row for Monday’s series opener agaisnt the White Sox at Citi Field.

The Mets owe Wright $87 million over the next four years and this hurts the Mets in more ways than one.

People close to Wright say that the grueling routine he must go through to get loose is tough on him.

“It’s been a few days now”, Wright told reporters of the neck issue after Saturday’s game. The Mets also need to find a spot on the 40-man roster for Loney even if Wright is put on the DL.
