The 33-year-old from Chesapeake, Va., says in a statement that his “neck simply did not respond to any of the treatments of the past few weeks”.
The news gives the Mets some much needed clarity on Wright as they now can plan to move forward this season without him. “I greatly appreciate the support of my teammates and our fans throughout the last few weeks”.
Wright was placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 30.
Alderson said the team will know more about Wright’s condition later this week after his doctor, Dr. Robert Watkins, discusses with team doctors whether surgery is the best option for Wright.
Mets third baseman David Wright will undergo surgery to fix a herniated disc in his neck today in Marina del Rey, California.
Wright will put his 2016 campaign on pause having compiled a.226 batting average, seven home runs and 14 RBI.

The defending National League champion Mets (35-29) were in second place in the NL East, five games behind the Washington Nationals heading into Thursday’s game against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. As FOX’s Ken Rosenthal reported in early June (Twitter link), the Mets have insurance on the contract, which will cover 75 percent of the money owed to Wright after he misses 60 days. In addition to his woes at the plate, Wright looked slower in the field as he had to undergo an arduous pre-game routine just to get ready to play every day. Wilmer Flores and Ty Kelly have stepped up for NY during Wright’s absence, with Flores establishing himself as the current starter.
