Next up for the Argentine team will be Belgium in the semi-finals. “The match didn’t slip away because of fatigue but because of little things”, Conchita Martinez, who is making her debut as Spain’s Davis Cup captain this weekend, said after the doubles loss.

The Argentine pairing of Carlos Berlocq and Leonardo Mayer thumped Serbians Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 for an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Davis Cup quarter-finals in Argentina on Saturday.

The previous day Berlocq had overcome Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic in doubles to clinch the series against Serbia, who suffered without world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

The Serbian pair’s confidence was shattered – the final set over in just seven games as Berlocq and Mayer dominated. Mayer beat Filip Krajinovic, while Delbonis defeated Troicki from two sets down. It has made it to the semifinals in eight of the last 10 years, but in 2014 it was knocked out in the first round.

Argentina is one of only three teams that have played in more than one final without winning a title, along with Romania and India.
