Somdev Devvarman delivered when it mattered as he tamed Marcus Daniell in straight sets to level the Asia/Oceania Davis Cup tie against New Zealand 2-2, here Sunday.
Somdev’s win levelled the proceedings and piled up the pressure on Yuki Bhambri who was up next. Just like the first set, Yuki once again won more number of winners in 31 as compared to Venus’s 22.
In a clash of the No. 1 singles players, Kiwi Rubin Statham and Somdev Devvarman will both chase their first win of the tie. Yuki had tightened his grip over the match and it was a matter of time before he served out the second too.
The advantage of that early break stayed with him throughout and he served out the set in the 10th. He had no trouble as he served for a two-set lead.
New Zealand’s two wins came from Venus, who toppled Devverman in five sets on Friday, and the doubles combination of Daniell and Artem Sitak.
The Davis Cup tie between New Zealand and India has gone down to a decider at Wilding Park in Christchurch.
Somdev went about his business calmly today and made a perfect start when he broke Daniell in the very first game of the opening set.
“We had two break points and that s not saying much”.
The third was the charm, as Venus sent a backhand into the net, handing Bhambri a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
He thwarted Daniell’s attempt of a comeback by saving a break chance on his serve in the sixth game. His tendency to move into the net to then get stranded at the front of the court immediately exploited by Devvarman. He took home the first set comfortably with a score of 6-4.
