Davis leaves with injured hip as Pelicans get first win

And so even as star Anthony Davis left Tuesday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks at halftime – he scored 17 points in the first half and didn’t play in the second with a right hip contusion – the Pelicans found a way to (finally) win. The one constant on the floor all year though had been Anthony Davis, one of the best players in the National Basketball Association who gave the Pelicans a chance in most games.

“I just know he had a few problems and I don’t know if it is a groin or hamstring, ” Gentry. Initial X-rays at the arena were negative. After the game, Gentry didn’t know if Davis was making the trip to Atlanta, Ga.

Another banged-up player probably doesn’t suprise Gentry because Davis joins Norris Cole, Tyreke Evans, Kendrick Perkins and Quincy Pondexter on the team’s injury report.

Davis’ stat line of 17 points and 7 assists is particularly impressive considering it all came in the first half.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do”. Obviously now that we have a win, we want to kind of move on past (it) and have a winning mentality now.

“We missed a few open shots, but by and large they outfought us for the win. Their level of force was higher without question”. Gordon scored 10 points and Holiday 10 before the break.Pachulia, who scored the Mavericks’ first points more than three minutes into the game, led Dallas at the half with 10 points.NOTES: The Pelicans signed free agent G Jimmer Fredette on Tuesday. He’s averaged 22.7 points and shot 48.4 percent in his last nine at New Orleans, and scored 24 when Dallas suffered its only defeat in the last 12 meetings with the Pelicans, 109-106 on the road January 25. The Alabama product finished with eight points, a season-high seven rebounds and gave the Pelicans a big spark of energy from the moment he subbed into the game.

There weren’t many highlights for the Mavericks, but Dwight Powell perfectly timed an offensive rebound of Devin Harris’ miss and rammed in a two-handed dunk late in the third quarter. C Omer Asik played for the first time in four games after missing the previous three with a calf strain. Guard Jrue Holiday added 10 points in 15 minutes.

Tuesday night marked the first game in a run of four contests in five nights for Dallas. It’s the only time this season the Mavericks will have to do this and coach Rick Carlisle is all right with that.

Understandably, AD, who had 25 and six against the Mavs, didn’t have much to say after the loss, but he did step up and show a few great accountability.
