Day 1 of Democratic National Convention: A Tale of Two Parties

Tennessee was not among the delegations with large rowdy packs of Sanders loyalists. Thanks to judicious directing by the television pool, the crying, defiant Sanders supporters seemed to be energized at the beginning of the day, reproached by the middle, and crying, resigned (perhaps) to his defeat by the end. DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced Sunday that she would resign from her post at the conclusion of the convention after WikiLeaks published thousands of emails online.

When Donald Trump tweeted after Bernie Sanders’ speech that Sanders “totally sold out to Crooked Hillary Clinton”. But the decision to make such a permanent political statement was about “way more than Bernie Sanders”, she says.

Wasserman Schultz and her fellow Democrats must also try to explain Obama administration policies – implemented by Secretary of State Hillary ClintonHillary Rodham ClintonConvention shows Dems are unified, to dismay of Trump and media Clinton open to “conversation” on carbon tax Poll: Trump up by 1 point in Ga. (There has been some talk of a walk out on Tim Kaine on Wednesday as well as some other demonstrations.) There will nearly certainly be plenty of people in the streets protesting for their causes.

She then declared: “I’m with Hillary”.

“Hillary Clinton will make an outstanding president, and I am proud to stand with her here tonight”, Sanders told a prime-time sign-waving audience at the Wells Fargo Center that featured TV close-ups of several of his supporters brushing back tears. “The choice is not even close”.

But many Sanders backers were adamant.

He took the stage to deafening applause as he wove Clinton into his stump speech, suggesting she fights for the same issues as he and his movement. “We are all Democrats and we need to act like it”. But she said she understands why some did, likening their expression to an opportunity to provide catharsis for the contentious race or booing the coach of an opposing football team.

“We urge them to ignore those who question their father’s citizenship or faith”, she said, a clear reference to Mr Trump’s early demands to see President Barack Obama’s birth certificate, Mrs Obama said.

He said Sanders supporters need to take a long-term pragmatic view and support Clinton.

“It’s more an expression of frustration”, Dworak said of the booing.

“I don’t know what hotel this is, but you ought to try turning on the air conditioning or we’re not going to get you paid”.

Sabrina Eaton and Stephen Koff have reported the emails also show DNC staffers contemplating sparking labor disruptions during the Republican Convention, including a restaurant workers strike.

“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves, and I watch my daughters, two attractive and intelligent black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn”, Obama said.

Against this restive backdrop, the party’s top lieutenants were forced into the role of prime-time peacemakers, tasked with encouraging Democratic unity in a party that has only lately acquiesced to tenuous detente.

It’s not hard to see why Donald Trump, the billionaire real estate mogul, may be appealing to some of Bill Clinton’s voters in old coal-mining towns across Appalachia and in the Rust Belt.

“Rapper Killer Mike told the crowd that “‘Good enough’ is no longer good enough”, adding that Sanderistas should become involved in Sanders’ new political action committee, Our Revolution, which aims to elect at least 100 progressive candidates this election on all levels of government.

“It was pretty raucous, but it was expected”, Mancini said. “Bernie!” even as she, much more so than anyone else who took the stage, expertly filleted the position of pro-Sanders holdouts. There are people here who are just diehard Bernie supporters.

“We’ll get through this and come out the other side and be united”, she said.

And yet wounds are evident. But if we’re going to challenge Trump for smears, we must hold Wasserman Schultz to the same standard. There are certainly comparisons to be drawn and lessons to be learned, especially for a Bernie or Bust contingent that feels frustrated and betrayed.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who finished second to Clinton in the Democratic race, said the country needs leadership that brings people together instead of insulting Latinos, Muslims, women, African-Americans and veterans. Only Clinton can succeed – which is why the DNC emails, coming after Clinton’s problems with her own emails, are a big deal. “Well, I boo Donald Trump”.
