Day 1 of Democratic National Convention begins with conflict
Other Bernie Sanders delegates from MI sat stone-faced as their candidate extolled the virtues of Hillary Clinton.

In New York’s delegation, annoyed Sanders supporters struggled to even secure a room to meet in to discuss all that’s happened.
Before he took the stage, a modified version of a popular Sanders campaign ad played on screen, featuring the song “America” by Simon and Garfunkel. “Now, we have both of those ready to go”.
Democratic party bosses later issued an apology to Mr Sanders for what they said were “inexcusable” emails.
Some Sanders supporters protested outside of the Wells Fargo Center during the day, braving a fierce afternoon thunderstorm in hopes of persuading superdelegates to switch their allegiance to the Vermont socialist.
And as he implored them to back his Democratic rival in the final major speech of the night, they held aloft their blue “Bernie” signs and chanted his name.
“I wouldn’t vote for [Hillary] for dog catcher”. “This election is about overturning Citizens United, one of the worst Supreme Court decisions in the history of our country”, he said.
The First Lady also spoke tonight. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) – built toward a crescendo rather than a crash.
In a direct message to his supporters, many of whom have vowed not to support Clinton, Sanders admitted he was disappointed at the primary outcome.
Clinton, former USA secretary of state, is relying on support from Sanders loyalists in her November race against Republican Donald Trump, who has enjoyed a bounce in the polls following last week’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
Police estimated 5,500 people took part in Monday’s protests.
But not everyone. Scattered boos filled the arena. “Donald Trump doesn’t see me, he doesn’t hear me, and he definitely doesn’t speak for me”, said Somoza, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and spastic quadriplegia when she was born.
It’s that ugly question of “party unity” that’s plaguing Democrats at the start of their own convention. He said Sanders supporters need to take a long-term pragmatic view and support Clinton. “Bernie!” for almost a minute.
Sen. Al Franken got booed.
Mr Sanders, who said he had secured a series of commitments from Ms Clinton to include numerous progressive policies he championed in the party’s platform, said the election had not been about personalities. The first early in the day and the second just after the TV networks began their coverage at 9 p.m. central time.

The reception that greeted Wasserman Schultz – who tried to ignore it with repeated “thank yous” – was so angry that she was forced to change her mind and not gavel in the convention. Numerous speakers, including Secretary of State Alex Padilla and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, were drowned out by frustrated Sanders supporters.
