Day a cut above others in ‘big four’, says Faldo

Coming into this week, OWGR No. 2 golfer Dustin Johnson has won in his last two outings, the U.S. Open and Bridgestone Invitational, and certainly seems to have gotten the big event monkeys off of his back, as he now leads the FedExCup standings.

Although he fell away badly on the Old Course a year ago, Johnson has twice finished inside the top 10 at The Open, tying for second behind Darren Clarke at Sandwich in 2011.

“Why was it so hard?”

Try to avoid bunkers: Danny Willett of England hits out of a bunker on the eighth hole at Royal Troon. “It’s just something that I consider part of my talent, if that makes sense”. Nobody’s going to understand what it’s like in my shoes. In his last three tournaments, he has finished 5th in the BMW, 5th in The U.S, Open, and a win at The Byron Nelson. With 18 other players having withdrawn, he was looked upon as someone whose commitment might ease the backlash against golf for its perceived indifference about the sport returning to the Olympics.

“My dad drove me up”, Faldo said. “I’m not worrying about anybody else except myself, and again, I don’t expect people to fully understand it”.

“Maybe”, Johnson went on, “it’s something that’s just innately in me”.

Rory McIlroy needs to tighten up his game technically to regain the world No1 spot and add to his tally of four Major wins, says Nick Faldo.

And, if there was any doubt that he still deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, McIlroy pointedly reminded everyone how they rank in terms of majors. “More sweet, but the fact that you’ve got to give it back, you know it’s coming. You’re just going to be jealous when I get that gold, ‘” Spieth said. “So that’s how it went”.

But he never got going on Sunday and ultimately missed a playoff – eventually won by American Zach Johnson – after leaving a 10-metre birdie putt on the 72nd hole a revolution short. Spieth usually finishes better than he plays, so expect a top 10 even if he doesn’t bring his best form. “And, although I’ve no real positive momentum to build off, that being said, I’m playing quite nicely”. “I don’t think it would be appropriate given our decision on the Olympics”. I think that this championship now stands on its own as the one to win.

Even his T30 at St. Andrews previous year was a fair effort given the quotes he gave when looking ahead to the event.

“Use it as a positive, find motivation there, find it as an opportunity”, the golfer said.

“It will loom over me throughout the Olympic games, for sure”, he said. But I hope I have the Claret Jug in my possession before that time. Hunter Mahan is playing for the first time since the birth of his third child, Hazel. Even being the 2nd highest priced golfer on Draftkings this week which is a 1,000 dollar increase from his price at the U.S. Open, I don’t see any reason to fade DJ.

He said the Tiger Woods era spoiled golf fans into believing everyone should win tournaments when given a chance, and no one was better at that than Woods.

“I can’t actually remember too much of the course though, other than it was obviously a classic links test”.
