Day hopeful of defending title at Torrey Pines
Former ECU gofer Harold Varner, III shot a five under par 67 in the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open.

Phil Mickelson laments a poor bunker shot during another round that got away from him at Torrey Pines, a 73 on Sunday in 2006, as he faded from contention to eighth place in the PGA Tour stop.
That is the top of the order at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines this week and the quality of field Jason Day must beat to keep up with the golfing Joneses, aka Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy.
His previous form at Torrey Pines offers little encouragement with a best of T42 in five appearances but he will be highly motivated this week and after a five birdie back nine to shoot 66 in the third round last week he is clearly hitting the ball well enough to score. The restaurant’s temporary closure coincides with a year-long shutdown of the 18-hole northern course at Torrey Pines, which is also slated to undergo large-scale renovations.
The duo were tied on six under par after both opened with rounds of 66 with Brown having eight birdies and two bogeys in his round.
“With where my game’s at, the best it has been this early in the season in my career, I’m working on getting ready for Augusta”.
Shane Lowry is also in action at the Farmers Insurance Open.
“I really didn’t feel the stress”, Mickelson, who tied for third at last week’s CareerBuilder Challenge in his first event of the season, said of his stumbling start on Thursday.
Phil never disappoints when it comes to miracle recovery attempts from all parts of the golf course. Overall, Snedeker has four top-three finishes on this course, making him the most consistent player at this event over the last decade.
His revamped golf swing looked fantastic last week and further consolidation of those changes might well see him in the mix.
Day’s thrilling play-off victory previous year was the continuation of a string of high finishes at Torrey Pines but Leishman, too, has proved somewhat a specialist on the Southern California layout. He has won here three times, but he hasn’t won in 15 years.
“My perfectionist self is going to say it should have been better because I didn’t play the par-5s well”, he said.
This year, however, even by his standards, he sounds downright giddy about his coming days and years despite turning 46 in July and not winning since the 2013 British Open. I just needed to be patient.

As mentioned last week, I make a few of my own personal DraftKings picks for the PGA event and then compare those picks with the advice given by others I follow, including my good buddy Steve from www.GolfBanker.com.
