Day wins BMW Championship to become new number one
He had committed to play in the season-opening Frys.com Open on October.

Day’s runaway victory Sunday in the BMW Championship vaulted him to No. 1 in the world ranking, backing up a boast the then little-known Australian made during a conference call with reporters in 2007 – and for which he was roasted on more than one occasion since.
With that performance, he has already earned at least one player’s vote.
Jordan Spieth, who tied for 13th, dominated the early part of the calendar by taking the year’s first two majors and remains in FedEx Cup contention. “From what little I’ve met of Oscar, he’s got a lot of character, what everyone tells me he’s got tremendous character”.
“I thought I always had it in me, but just to be able to do it and play the way I have and finish the way I have has been a fantastic ride”.
American Scott Piercy (70) was third at 15-under with Rickie Fowler (69), Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland (70) and JB Holmes (68) sharing fourth at 14-under. My mentality changed to demand wins and my whole team has been awesome .
Brendon Todd, playing alongside Day and Berger in the lead group, dropped dramatically from second to 18th after a nightmare five-over-par round of 76 which included a triple bogey on the fourth hole.
MONZA, Italy – Rikard Karlberg of Sweden beat Martin Kaymer in a playoff to win the Italian Open on Sunday for his first European Tour victory.
It is the seventh tour win for Day, the fifth of the season after winning the Farmers Insurance Open, the Canadian Open, his maiden major at the PGA Championship and the opening playoff event, The Barclays, prior to this triumph. Day fired a final round 69 to win by six strokes. “It has been an wonderful ride”, said Day, who now has a chance to pass Spieth for PGA Tour player of the year honours. His goals, though, relate to 2016 and beyond. Spieth, Fowler, Henrik Stenson and Bubba Watson are the others in a very nice spot.
The son of a Filipina immigrant from Leyte, Day started hitting balls at age 6 with a 3-wood that his late Australian father, Alvin, recovered from a trash heap in Australia.
It does not leave much time to contemplate the view from the top – which Day said so far does not seem that different anyway. I don’t think it will sink in until I look at the rankings and see my name on top of the list. Instead he’s thinking about his game. I may not show it but inside I’m going up and down.
“I would still thank them because that was kind of the fuel that lit the fire for me, especially with the dedication over these last few years”.

“When he’s getting so deep under par and you’re trying to catch him, you get too aggressive and that’s where my mistakes were”.
