How about the ratings, though?

Tiger Woods lasted 36 holes.

After a disappointing tie for 28th behind Spieth in the Masters, Day was back in contention at the US Open at Chambers Bay. “He played like a champion and he fully deserved this win“.

Day is relishing more Sunday shootouts with world No. 1 Jordan Spieth and excited about forging a special long-time rivalry with the American phenom and Northern Irish superstar Rory McIlroy.

“It was certainly was a lifelong goal of mine that was accomplished today”, Spieth said. And as Nantz pointed out on Sunday, there are several other young talents who will be pushing these three in the years to come. If he was to lose, it would have only been to an insanely good round of golf by Spieth, or anyone else in the chasing pack. Beginning with McIlroy’s victory at last year’s PGA, the new stars of the game have provided just the boost and sense of optimism the sport needed at just the right time.

‘That’s why a lot of emotion came out on 18, just knowing that my mom took a second mortgage out on the house, borrowed money from my aunt and uncle, just to get me away from where I was to go to school, seven hours drive.

“It’s going to be the last counting event for Ryder Cup points next year which is obviously a worthy stature”, Clarke said. And if that wasn’t enough, he was paired with Masters and U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth, the new No. 1 player in golf.

“It felt like I was mentally and physically grinding it out as hard as I could”, he said.

McIlroy’s nine under par total left him alone in 17th at Whistling Straits as Australian Jason Day claimed his debut major title.

“I’ve played the best golf of my life since I turned 30”, the world number five said in a telephone interview from his home in the Bahamas, as he confirmed his participation in the European Tour’s Hong Kong Open in October.

He saw a mature, married man with a son and another child due in November, and someone now with six PGA Tour wins that include a major. I could hear the fans… some people were out there going “choke, choke, choke” to me.

“I think golf is in a very healthy stage now. Just to be able to finish the way I did was awesome”.

Spieth said he relishes the excitement and pressure of playing major championships, but joked that one of the reasons he has a receding hairline is because of the stress they create.

But this year’s majors all had their own intrigue, and Spieth was the common thread.

“I’ve had a couple of times where we’ve been able to do that at a high level and it is so much more fun that way than having two guys throwing up on themselves coming down the stretch“. He delivered a record-setting performance at Whistling Straits that brought him a major championship he started to wonder might never happen. How good a player you are should be very evident by how you play in the first 63 holes in the “Big Four”.
