Dayton pastor shot, killed during Sunday services

Police said a man shot and killed a pastor at a Dayton church Sunday.

According to WDTN, witnesses have noted that after pastor Schooler took to the pulpit, his brother Daniel allegedly followed him to the stage from the pews and began opening fire on the man. As the bullets rained through the church, parishioners ran from the building in a scene described as chaotic.

The suspect was Schooler’s brother, 68-year-old Daniel Schooler.

Other than confirming the fatal shooting of the pastor, police have not yet provided an official statement about the incident and their investigation.

Dayton Police took the shooter out of the church in handcuffs and placed him in the back of a cruiser.

Authorities have confirmed the shooting reported at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church. Officer believe Schooler’s brother is the suspect. His Facebook page is scarce, showing just a couple photos and that he lives in Dayton, Ohio. The victim is identified as William Schooler, 70, of Dayton.

Witnesses said the shooting happened while the choir was singing. Despite early witness accounts, police said, Schooler was not in the pulpit when he was attacked.

Members of the church said they started to hear gun shots.

Investigators haven’t yet identified a motive in the shooting.

Schooler died from his injuries at the scene. He was a decorated war veteran from Vietnam who had worked in the local public school district for more than 30 years.
